Power of Imagination

What can imagination do for you? Just imagine and you might find out:

Imagination is powered by our experiences, intuition and a powerful inner tool called brain. The brain is very much programmed for survival instincts first and then, for any other needs. The signals received by this organ are analyzed in this order before any instructions are sent out to other organs in millions per second. These instincts of survival give the body its resilience in adverse circumstances. Through experiences, we have survived by being wary of the unwanted situations using these survival instincts. Evolution process has strengthened these instincts. Nothing comes before the survival is ensured. These instincts are always present in our minds and make us argue against any 'non-normal' imagination to keep us from 'unknown harm'. That's why, accomplishing certain 'unimaginable' wonders outside of our normal functions requires training of this brain under discipline. Very few venture in such training.

But, what would require such training? Imagine the following circumstances:

* Strong desire to succeed -- Be it in your life, ventures or even relationships. Strong positive desire can do wonders. But, mind, being surrounded by survival instincts including fear, also presents negative results. History is full of examples of continuous failures of people who just did not know how to give up. Their persistence and determination brought bigger obstacles to knees. To achieve such miracles, brain must be trained to withstand long periods of hard work (or penance) because good things do require a test of the strength of your desire.

* Painful experience of the body and/or mind -- Normal would be to cope with the grief in stages over time. Extra would be accept it sooner as destiny and search for a 'worthy' lesson outside of own emotions. Every experience is part of the process that has sharpened our survival instincts. The training of the mind also comes during these periods. In dirt hides the diamond. You just have to find these diamonds, polish them and then you'll see their real beauty in the broader picture of life.

* Fear of change -- This is what keeps people stay put. Not many like the change because of its unknown parameters and consequences. But, as Gita says, 'Change is the law of Nature'. If you lose your own stubbornly-held perspective, you can dream and imagine the possibilities of the future. Actually put yourself in the shoe of the other person to understand their reaction/behavior. But, when the fear of change sets in you, introspect to learn what good will it bring after the change. Same goes for relationships. As we grow older, some habits start to firm up around which everyone searches for compatibility. But, what ensures easier match is the flexibility in our approach towards the other and some imagination of great unseen possibilities.

It is very hard to imagine any bad event is for your own good. And, if you appreciate the gift of life enough, you will later understand how that event was 'good' in shaping the course of your life. Our granths have repeatedly advised us to have faith and remember the impermanence of life. This brings coherence in our thought process and removes the curtain of doubt, fear and negativity.

Albert Einstein once said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create."

On the other note, think about what Blaise Pascal said, "Imagination disposes of everything; it creates beauty, justice, and happiness, which are everything in this world."

Faith and Logic

People look for inspiration in many corners and many forms. Everyone has their own method to getting it, be it the right way or not. I find a lot of inspiration in the beauty of character, emotions and faith in our hindu scriptures. But, some argue that reading such religious scriptures should be reserved for old age. I feel that people relate these religious books to offering prayer to the god. However, that perception may just point to the lost meaning of the originality of these books in their minds.

In fact, a book like Ramcharitmanas should be studied to understand and adopt the great character (charit) of the idealism shown by lord Ram. The real meaning of its dohas and chaupais can only be understood when analyzed in depth, and not just in literal sense. It cannot just be recited in hurry to complete with belief that you'll please the god through such actions. The words are decorated by Tulsidas ji using Alankar (or adjectives) that beautify the meaning and show the real depth of emotions. Unless you've really immersed yourself in the meaning of these emotions by putting yourself in the situation, you can hardly realize the beauty of their depth, guiding thoughts and real life lessons. Giving others your love is one of such lessons; Having faith is another.

Faith, in my opinion, is the least realized strength of much of the population. Faith cannot be explained by logic. It forms through strong belief and gets better through life experiences, devotion and discipline. But, it can be severely challenged by the human psyche that induces logic. One that is hard to understand cannot be fathomed by our own logic which rationalizes day-to-day events for us. In the circumstances of intense negativity, one becomes prone to losing faith over logic. This further induces decision-making based on facts that would make sense to the normal human psyche. On the other hand, faith is the strong belief that brings sanity and optimism. Human mind and body are programmed to rebound from adversities through the eternal evolution process. But, logic prevents us to think highly of our own capabilities in adverse situations. We may think that - situation is so overpowering; there is no god, etc. But, that brings us to the stage of doubt that neither gets you the logical result nor the inner contentment obtained by faith in the ultimate success. This is where religious scriptures play a beautiful role. They demonstrate through examples and guide us towards the best possible virtues.

It is easy to lose courage, get anxious or sometimes even cry on adverse results. But, think this when you are in such situations that, god is putting you through it to save YOU from something even worse in the future. You are learning it now and will be able to better handle it in the future. This type of thinking will bring you the positive attitude in starting to accept many adverse events as learning experiences rather than failures. Life is never lived in parts; It's a continuous experience over lifetimes. ANY event in our lives should be thought of as our destiny because this strengthens your faith and keeps away negative attitude. As long as we do our karm (duties) right, we should not worry about negative events, as they may come from outside of your control.

In fact, when you read any book (religious or not), read it with the same faith and devotion with which it was written. And, read it patiently, in depth, to understand and enjoy the actual moment that went into its lines and use your imagination to possibly apply those good virtues in your life. And, then you'll find that these are not merely post-retirement reading material, but a collection of rare gems that you uncovered through your own curious soul and true introspection in the depths of your psyche.

Shri Ram explains the nine types of devotion or penance:

The nine ways of devotion, I impart to you. Listen you well and remember it always. The first is, fellowship with saints (or good company). The second, fondness for legends of the Lord.

Selfless service to the Guru's lotus feet is the third way. The fourth, hymns to the Lord's virtues with a heart clear of guile or deceipt.

Chanting my mystic name with steadfast faith is the fifth way as the Vedas reveal. The sixth, is to practice self-control, good character, detachment from manifold activities and always follow the duties as good religious person.

The seventh sees the whole world as the Lord and regards the saints higher than the Lord. The eighth, enjoins contentment with what one has. And, dream not of finding faults in others.

The ninth demands simplicity and behavior without deceit with all. And, to have strong faith in the Lord with neither exhaltation nor depression in any life circumstance. Anyone with any of the nine types of devotion is very dear to me. Then, you, dear shabri, have all of the above.

Ayurvedic remedy for cough

Try Kanth Sudharak Vati (कंठ सुधारक वटी) from UAP Pharma (Unjha)!!!

It works like a charm on cough, sore throat etc. It sells in most of the ayurvedic medicine shops in India. I tried a 10gm little bottle that contains mini round ayurvedic pills that taste good and work immediately. But, if you want to prepare your own, mulethi is one of the good ingredient to start with.

Interesting article on Gun Milap

I found an neatly-edited article about Gun Milap on the web. The unique thing it teaches on how to calculate the individual Kutas as well, besides a sum of all 7 of them. Take a read by clicking here.

Some of you may not believe in these things at all. I respect your opinion that way. But, I must say that many ancient jyotish calculations are based on very accurate calculations based on movement of planets. In high-school we study about the gravitational forces, depicted by constant 'G'. So, at least, believe that big bodies do influence other bodies in this universe. Interestingly, Vimshottari dasha is also calculated based on such influences. If you want to do some research on it, you will find out how it is calculated. Most pundits agree that Vimshottari dasha is one such calculation that is very close to being amazingly accurate, if analyzed properly.

Infant of the zodiac

People ask me why I call myself an optimist on this blog. Besides telling them that I am one, I tried to find out why it is so.

Was it because of life circumstances while growing up, or something more profound as effect of planets on me? It surprisingly comes very close. I have been brought up in the environment where people have set very proud examples to come out of extreme hardships or difficult life situations, even before my birth. On the other hand, it could be that the planet Mars (Lord of Aries) just had enough influence during my birth and I absorbed the flavor of the infant of the zodiac. Remember, how an infant is. A baby is very optimistic that he will get what he wants. The baby gets upset one moment and then forgets and smiles the next moment. The star signs possibly inculcate those instincts in any of its members they influence.

When I was a baby, my mother tells a story that when I got a bit stubborn for something that she didn't want to give, I will keep crying for 5 minutes, sitting close to her. Then, the next moment I will get distracted by a big ant crawling on the floor and stop crying. My mom used to just smile at that.

That was then. Now, that I have grown up, I don't do that anymore. :-) Part of the optimism comes from my strong belief that God has made me capable to achieve anything. But, if I keep asking, he is just going to laugh at it. Karm Yog teaches us that we are bound by our karmas, on which we have the control and not on the outcome. So, why not see the silver lining on every cloud you see. Too often people take events negatively or think of something that happened to them as bad part of destiny. Think of Geeta, you'll get only that much what you have been assigned. So, why worry and waste the precious life!!

Every human has hidden sleeping inner powers that can be harnessed to achieve anything. These powers put optimism and resilience in you that can sail you through any storm. So, go for it.

(Some parts adopted from lectures...)

The Chariot of Life (जीवन रथ)

Seeing Ravan on a chariot and Ram on foot, Vibhishan was most disconcerted. His extreme love for the lord made him doubtful; he bowed to Ram and spoke most tenderly...

Dear lord, you have no chariot, nor any protection armour and you are bare foot. How, then, can you conquer this mighty stalwart (Ravan)? Then, Ram says, dear friend, The Chariot (स्यंदन/रथ) which leads one to victory (over maladies), is of another kind.

Valour and Fortitude are the chariot's two wheels; Truth and Vituous Conduct are its abiding flag and pennant; Strength, Discretion, Self-control and Benevolence are its four horses; Forgiveness, Compassion and Equipoise in all circumstances are its reins that harness the horses.

The Worship of God is its skilled charioteer; Dispassion is his shield and Contentment is his sword; Charity is his axe and Reason is his fierce power; Highest Wisdom is his relentless bow.

A Pure, Steady Mind is his quiver; Restraint, Serenity and Duties are his arrows; Worship of Guru and Brahmins is his impenetrable armour; There is no other way to ensure victory than this.

My friend, he who rides this chariot of Dharma, has no enemy left to conquer in whole world, let alone Ravan.

(May you turn all earth into reams of paper, forest into your pen; And the seven seas into your ink, Still the glory of a guru is hard to script.)

Seven Answers of Life

Tulsidas ji writes the seven critical answers of life very beautifully in Ramcharitmanas. This is depicted in lines of conversation between King of birds Garud and Sage Kakbhusundi in the 7th Sopaan, 'Uttarkand', Doha 120.

। (Dear lord, please answer my seven questions, knowing that your affection is on me and my services are for you.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, tell me lord, what form of birth and life is rare and difficult to attain?

Tell me briefly about what gives greatest misery and greatest happiness to humanity?

Tell me what are essential virtues of a Saint and a Sinner?

Tell me what is the greatest Virtue, as described in big vedas, and what is the greatest Sin for human beings?

Hey kind and wise lord, tell me what are the bad thoughts, emotions and maladies of humanity?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then, Kakbhusundi ji happily answers these questions and says:

There is no other form of birth and life as good as the form (yoni) of a human being. All creation, animate or inanimate, desire to take birth as a human being. The human body is the ladder through which one can attain Hell, Heaven or Salvation. This human body also provides opportunity to attain Devotion, Vision/Self-Realization and Renunciation from maladies, the three most coveted virtues to attain salvation (मोक्ष).

The poverty is the greatest misery for the humanity. The grace of a Saint is the greatest happiness for the humanity.

A Saint always does good to others in his thoughts, deeds and words and this is their natural habit.
While a Saint bears the pain in helping others, a Sinner bears the pain to give pain to others.

The purest virtue according to Vedas is practicing non-violence. On the other hand, no sin is greater than to speak ill of Others.

(Moh - used as 'Ignorance' above; but can also be illusion, affection, infatuation, fascination or, spell)

Moh is the root cause of all maladies and it generates many other troubles like desires, anger, greed, infatuation, vanity, pride and envy. Moh could take form of a blinding attachment in human relationships, strong infatuation with easy ways of life, excessive fascination with new ideas, ignorance about true and time-tested virtues or being spell-bound in self-righteousness.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, Tulsidas ji provides the remedy for these maladies:

Even good conduct (niyam), religious duties, penance, realization, sacrifice, chanting, charity and other millions of cures cannot eliminate these seven maladies mentioned above.

Just realizing the existence of these maladies in ourselves certainly makes them less effective, but these never go away totally.

The grace of lord Ram can eliminate all of the maladies, if the circumstances so arise. You just trust the words of a well-wishing curer and your restraint should be such that you don't desire the pleasures. Then, you shall becomes free of these ills in your life.

(Chyawanprash)

Chyawanprash is a great ayurvedic preparation that enhances your immunity and cures many imbalances in the body. But, before you go ahead and buy it, make sure you don't just buy a good tasting commercial product. The genuine Chyawanprash contains all critical ingredients that were devised by Chyawan Rishi who regained his youth by regularly consuming it. In today's commercial versions, most often Ashtavarg, a crucial group of herbs, is not used. So, be sure that your Chyawanprash specifies it. In my experience, the Chyawanprash made by Gita Press is very good and it specifies on the label that it contains Ashtavarg.

According to Charak Samhita, this great ayurvedic avaleh (preparation/अवलेह) cures heart problems, lowers cholesterol in addition to curing other respiratory diseases. Charak Samhita is the ancient ayurvedic text written by rishi Charak. The original Chyawanprash consists of 48 ingredients with Amla (Indian Gooseberry) being the main ingredient. These ingredients provide this avaleh with its anti-oxidant powers that also provide rejuvenation, energy and immunity boost.

Mother and Motherland

Mother and Motherland (Birthplace) are greater than the Heaven.

Ayurvedic Remedies of Anxiety

In these times, human has involved himself with many materialistic dimensions of life that leaves no time for meditation or self-inspection. This deteriorates the physical composition of the body and mind and results in conditions that overwhelm the individual. Anxiety is one of them. It could result due to situtations in or out of our control, such as personal loss, financial troubles, bodily malfunctions etc.

Following is a suggested remedy for anxiety, mild or severe, and related symptoms, as described by Dr. Pankaj Naram on TV:

Mix the following (tsp = teaspoonful):

1/4 tsp Dry ginger powder (सोंठ)
1/4 tsp Black pepper powder (काली मिर्च)
1-2 pinch Piper Longam powder (पिप्पली)
1/4 tsp Vaja powder
1/4 to 1/2 tsp Brahmi powder (ब्राह्मी)

Mix them in Cow's Ghee (clarified butter) and take twice daily for a month. Alternatively, one can take the above mixture with milk, water or little bit of honey.

Also do this marma: Press 6 times at the bottom of the hand thumb close to the fork with index finger. It's easier to do if you face your palm away from the body and use your middle finger of the other hand to press. This all should alleviate the anxiety and bring peace in your mind.

Alternative Approach suggested by Dr. Naram

In case, the intake of cow's ghee is not permitted due to health reasons, one can do the following:
* 1 tsp dry ginger powder mixed in 3 tsp Cow's ghee should be applied to the left part of the chest and rubbed until the ghee disappears.
* Additionally, cow's ghee 1/2 tsp each should be applied to right and left temples on the head and rubbed until the ghee disappears. This relieves the person of anxiety in 30 minutes.

If even the above treatment is prohibited, brahmi herb is known to calm the nerves and it can be taken regularly.

The "Heart-felt" Vegetable

Lauki (or Bottle Gourd) is the best medicine for heart. It can open up the clogged arteries when consumed in sufficient quantities. There are many recipes for this vegetable. However, the fastest and easiest way to gain benefits is by consuming its juice. Do this at least 3 times a day for 15-20 days.

Lauki juice can be made after grating the vegetable, preferably in kaddu kas (no idea, what you'd call in English). After you get the soft grated fibers of Lauki, you squeeze them using any kitchen tool, e.g. big garlic/lemon press. You can also use big spoons etc. That way, you will collect enough juice into different container. This vegetable contains lots of water. So, you shouldn't have a problem with the quantity. Also, mix some Tulsi (Basil) and Pudina (Mint) juice, if available.

Now, it's not fun to drink this thing on a daily basis. So, it's recommended that you put some ground black pepper and black salt for your taste. Instead, you can squeeze a lemon or few honey drops as well.

Besides the above remedy, you should also take few tablets of Arjuna bark powder, available in many shops. The scientific name of this tree is Terminalia Arjuna, very widely grown in India. Also, few cloves of raw garlic in the morning will keep the cholesterol levels low.

Disclaimer: This is a natural ayurvedic formula. I am no doctor. Please see a doctor for an emergency.

(Study of 'Self')

(Duties of Beings)

(Listen it at गौरी पूजा १ और गौरी पूजा २)

From the creeper-covered bower emerged the two brothers at that moment. Verily like a pair of spotless moons tearing through a veil of dark clouds.

Then, the girlfriend of Sita after having seen the two brother in the garden sings to Sita on asking the reason of her cheer...

Two princes have come to see the garden. Dear girlfriend, such is their measureless beauty,That my words cannot describe their grace.

Then the girlfriend showed Site the princes by the creeper. The youthful brothers, one dark, the other fair, were a delight.

Remembering the words of Narad, the celestial sage, Sita was filled with innocent, pure love. She cast her anxious eyes all around her, Like a young startled fawn.

On beholding the beauty of Ram, her enraptured eyes filled with longing. And the delight of one who has found long-lost treasure.

Sita was faint with an excess of love. Like the love-athirst chakor gazing at the autumn moon.

Receiving Ram into her heart by the pathway of her eyes, She cleverly closed on him the doorway of her eyelids, as if she saved his image in her eyes.

Glory to you, O' Daughter of the Mountain King. Glory to you, for you gaze upon Lord Shiva, as does the love-lorn chakor at the moon.
Glory to you, O' Mother of lord elephant-god Ganesh and six-faced lord Kartikeya. O' Cosmic Mother with lightening-bright presence.

All who adore your lotus feet, O' Goddess, are blessed with happiness, be they men, gods or sages.

You know the longing in my heart, For you dwell in the hearts of all.For this have I refrained from declaring my love aloud.

Goddess Girija was overcome by Sita's humble devotion. And, a garland slipped from her divine hands, And, the beatific image smiled in benediction.
Reverently did Sita place the divine blessing on her bowed head. And thus spoke the Goddess, her own heart full of joy:

"Hear, O' Sita, my infallible blessing. Your heart's desire shall be fulfilled. For sage Narad's words are ever true and pure, Yours shall be the suitor upon whom your heart is set."

He who is engraved in your heart will be your husband। He that is dark-hued and naturally handsome.
The merciful Lord who is omniscient, knows your loving heart, the love enshrined there.
Upon hearing the Goddess utter such gracious blessing, Sita was overcome with joy.
Poet Tulsidas recounts how a devout Sita prayed again and returned to the palace with joy in her heart.

Funny little Bart!!

One thing I love is The Simpsons. A few nights ago, the episode aired had a funny story with little Milhouse breaking up with his girlfriend. His friend Bart doesn't like his being occupied with her. In the end, when the gf joins a nun's school, Milhouse asks Bart...

Milhouse: ``Bart, you think I can ever find another one like her?''
Bart: ``You're asking the wrong guy, Milhouse. They all look alike to me. Now let's go whip donuts at old people.''

Ha ha ha...so funny coming out of that naughty little Bart Simpson. You've got to see it.

Overwhelming dialogue between Ram and Bharat on Duty Vs Love

(Gotu Kola) herb

Recently horticulture has occupied my mind and I hope to cultivate some great natural herbs in my garden. One of them that captured my mind is Gotu Kola. In Hindi, it's called Brahmi. I remember from my childhood that we used to buy Brahmi Amla Oil for our hair.

Seen in the picture on the left, Brahmi is a great herb for the brain. It can calm and soothe our nerves. It's scientific name is Centella Asiatica. It has been traditionally used in Ayurved as a medicinal herb to treat mental fatigue, skin diseases and stomach ailments etc. It can be used and taken as powder, tea, paste or in supplements. My grandfather was an expert in herbal medicines and I hope I can bring those experiences alive through my efforts.

More on other herbs later...

Honest advisors

Marichi says to King Ravan in Ramayan:

Which means, O' gracious King, you will easily find people who always speak sweetly. But, rare are...the speakers and listeners........of bitter but honest advice that shows the right path.

These words are said many times, such as Maarichi saying it to Ravan and Vidur saying it to Dhritrashtra. Maarichi later transformed into the deceitful golden deer that took Ram away from Panchvati, in Ramayan. Vidur was an advisor to King Dhritrashtra, the father of Kauravas in Mahabharat.

MUST SEE:

TEXT FROM VIDEOS ABOVE AND MORE FROM RAMCHARITMANAS:

When everyone seated in Janak sabha, both brother came along with Brahmarishi Vishwamitr...
Then, came forth the two princes, the very abodes of beauty as it were.
Oceans of goodness refined in culture gallant heroes of exceeding grace, one charmingly dark-hued, the other brightly fair.

Resplendent amidst the galaxy of kings, they shone like two full moons amid a circle of stars. The reflection of his own inner disposition, each one there saw in the form of Lord.

After welcoming the Rishi and two brothers, Janak invited Sita to the Swayamvar...

Sita stepped forth, amid her charming, clever companions. As they sang in lovely melodious voices. A beautiful sari adorned her youthful body, Mother of the world was she incomparable in her beauty.

When Sita stepped into the arena, all beholders, gazed enraptured, men and women alike.

While Sita shyly looked for Ram with an anxious heart in that sabha, Gripped in infatuation were all kings gathered there. Soon Sita discovered the brothers beside the Rishi, On them were fastened her lovingly greedy eyes, as on the long-lost treasure.

As she saw the sages and the large assembly, A modest Sita retreated, shrinking into herself. She turned her eyes towards her companions, Yet having drawn Ram into her heart.
(Beautiful scene....must see in the video #1)

Then King Janak summoned the bards, And they came singing the praises of royalty. King then ordered them to announce his promise to everyone, Even bards were immersed in great happiness.

To the moon your valour this bow is the eclipse, Massive and unyielding it is all know. Even the mighty warriors Ravan and Baanasur slipped quietly away when the bow beheld.

This day, whoever in this royal assembly breaks this yonder unbending bow. He who thus becomes the victor of three worlds, Him, the daughter of Janak (Vaidehi) shall marry, Forthwith and knowing no hesitation.

With angry looks and steady aim, they grasped the bow, The bow refused to be lifted for all their exertions. They that had some sense in them, Refrained from even going near the bow.

The fools among princes indignantly strained at it, But retreated in shame when the bow stirred not. As if by absorbing the strength of each, it grew heavier and heavier.

Shiva's bow stirred no more than a chaste lady's heart at the allurements of a gallant. Great adjectives from Tulsidas...a rare sight in Kaliyug)
Then, King Janak got upset with all present and insulted their bravery. When Lakshaman heard his words, he got angry too and told Janak that when Raghukul prince Ram is present, Janak shouldn't speak such words. Ram then calms Lakshan down. At that moment,

Rishi Vishwamitr perceiving that the right moment had arrived, spoke in tones most endearing and soft. Arise, O'Ram and break the mighty bow of Shiva, And relieve father Janak of his deep distress.

On hearing the Guru's words, Ram bowed in reverence, neither joy nor sorrow was in his tranquil heart.

He rose in all his natural innate grace, So imperious his carriage, just like an excited elephant.

Like the morning sun climbing the eastern peaks, So did Ram rise to ascend the dais. Rejoiced all the saints like so many lotus blooms, Their eyes filled with joy like awakening bees at dawn.

Then Sita daughter of Janak cast a glance towards Ram, Her Heart awash with anxiety Sita implored this god and that.

Distraught, she prayed to them in her heart, "Be gracious to me O'Mahesh and Bhavani". "Reward my devoted service to you", "And favor me by lightening the weight of your bow".

"O'Ganesh, Chief of Shiva's attendents And bestower of boons, It is for this day that I served you with devotion". "Hear the supplications I make again and yet again and, Reduce the weight of the bow to a mere trifle".

"If I am true to my vow in thought, word and deed", "And if my heart be true to the lotus feet of Ram".

"Then God, who dwells in the hearts of all will make me the handmaiden of Ram. For wherever souls are bound in true affection, their union is sure to follow, with never a doubt."

Then, Ram first looked at the crowd of spectators, And found them motionless like still, painted pictures. As he turned his eyes towards Sita, the most gracious lord perceived that Sita was deeply distressed.

Seeing Sita in such distress, every passing moment felt like eternity to Ram. When a thirsty man dies for want of water, Of what avail is a lake of nectar to him once he's dead.

What use the rain when the whole crop has withered, What gains repentence when opportunity is lost. (This is one of Tulsidas' famous doha).
Reflecting inwardly thus, Ram looked at Sita, And thrilled all over, at her singular steadfast love.

Inwardly, he bowed to his wise preceptor, Vishwamitr, And, took up the bow with utmost ease and agility.

No one could estimate how quickly Ram lifted the bow, stretched the string and put it on the bow. And, then he broke the bow from the middle that filled the universe with its strong sound.

That's how Sita swayamvar ends with the marriage of Sita and Ram.

Ramayan's pearls of wisdom

There is no other inspirational source better than Ramayan for the best virtues of human life. Everytime I recite Ramcharitmanas or play the Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan DVD, I can't stop getting overwhelmed by the words and characters of the sacred text. In fact, the words that I never understood became more clear after watching the DVD and rekindling the memories of my childhood. Each and every word of Ramayan is filled with knowledge that should be adopted and kept in mind always. Here are a few instances:

When Ram and Lakshaman accompany guru Vishwamitr to the swayamvar of Sita upon receiving king Janak's invitation, the kings and princes present in Janak's sabha ridiculed both brothers, saying guru has brought two kids to tie the string on the bow. At that time, Tulsidas says, Fools were busy making fun of Ram when he got up and proceeded towards the bow. Tulsidas says, the bow became heavier and heavier for the kings with their ego and arrogance.

When Ram tied the bow string and then broke the Shiv Dhanush with little power, the strong vibrations from the bow reached lord Parashuram who arrived angrily at the scene. After he got ready to fight a war on Lakshman's arguments, Ram came forward to apologize and accept his punishment. Parashuram even ridiculed Ram and called him a manipulator and trying to protect their faults. But, Ram gave him an answer that hypnotized lord Parashuram and he saw lord Vishnu in Ram. Ram offered himself for the punishment and said... Thus he saved Lakshman from Parashuram's anger. Ram called himself a sevak and Parashuram a brahmin (विप्र). Ram said, as a Chhatriya, he only had one quality in his bow but as a brahim, Parashuram had nine qualities And, he said, बिप्रबंस कै असि प्रभुताई। Meaning that the greatness of his vipravansh was such that invincibles also were frightened by him. Then, lord Parashuram asked, hey ramapati (or Lakshmipati), I have a lord Vishnu's bow that you should pull to remove all my doubts. And, Ram does the same and Parashuram bows to Ram with a heart filled with love and joy.

In the past, I wrote about the 7 parts of Patanjali's Yog that include different states of body and mind. In this edition, you would see the different tendencies of the mind that Rishi Patanjali says you should control. Yog scriptures are very focused on mind (mentioned as Chitt or चित्त). In fact, they start by saying:

That means, Yog limits the oscillations or tendencies of the mind. When that happens, the soul gets into its "own" form. At other times or until then, the soul acts under these tendencies and does not realize its own form.

Now, there are unlimited types of such tendencies of the mind, but Yog has classified them in 5 categories and each of these tendencies may have two faces (Good or Bad):

(Knowledge) - Yog mentions 3 sources of right knowledge: प्रत्यक्ष (Direct Cognition), अनुमान (Inference) and आगम (Revelation). Either you experience it, infer it or receive it by preachings of saints and texts such as Geeta, this knowledge forms a tendency that controls the mind.

Of the two faces, if this knowledge is twisted, the individual gets lost in the materialistic world, desires and comforts. But, if the knowledge is pure and without doubts, the soul can realize the blemishes of worldly substances such as their short-life, misery etc.

(Illusion) - False or illusory knowledge can also create beliefs or tendencies in our minds. For example, constantly transforming nature of worldly substances can be mistaken for their short-life and thus, lead a person to renounce them. This would constitute a good face of this tendency.

(Imagination) - Fantasy or imagination of an object in its absence also captivates the mind. Thus, it affects the mind. A good face of this tendency would be to believe in god without ever having seen or perceived. A bad face would be immersing oneself in the worldly forms away from achievement of Yog.

(Sleep) - This is the state of total lack of awareness, ego and desires. Just as you wake up with soundness and purity from this state, it presents the good face of this tendency. The bad face would bring laziness and happiness in wasteful resting. Patanjali says sleep is also a state of conscious mind because we remember this state once we wake up.

(Memory) - The impressions of the subjects or situations that are experienced by above 4 tendencies are awakened under this tendency, known as memory.

In the end, Patanjali says that the control over these tendencies can only be obtained through practice and renunciation.

Individuals behave according to these tendencies in life, irrespective of the "own" self of the soul. These tendencies are conditioned according to many factors in biological and social environment for that individual. A level of understanding that can make the individual realize such placement of soul can only be acquired through dhyan or meditation, as we awaken the Kundalini powers in ourselves. Such powers are targeted by adopting Yog sutras such as Pranayam.
