Seeing Ravan on a chariot and Ram on foot, Vibhishan was most disconcerted. His extreme love for the lord made him doubtful; he bowed to Ram and spoke most tenderly...
Dear lord, you have no chariot, nor any protection armour and you are bare foot. How, then, can you conquer this mighty stalwart (Ravan)? Then, Ram says, dear friend, The Chariot (स्यंदन/रथ) which leads one to victory (over maladies), is of another kind.
Valour and Fortitude are the chariot's two wheels; Truth and Vituous Conduct are its abiding flag and pennant; Strength, Discretion, Self-control and Benevolence are its four horses; Forgiveness, Compassion and Equipoise in all circumstances are its reins that harness the horses.
The Worship of God is its skilled charioteer; Dispassion is his shield and Contentment is his sword; Charity is his axe and Reason is his fierce power; Highest Wisdom is his relentless bow.
A Pure, Steady Mind is his quiver; Restraint, Serenity and Duties are his arrows; Worship of Guru and Brahmins is his impenetrable armour; There is no other way to ensure victory than this.
My friend, he who rides this chariot of Dharma, has no enemy left to conquer in whole world, let alone Ravan.
